1. Assess the incident (Safely)
• Identify what you saw (make notes).
• Can you identify what has spilt.
• How much.
• Where did the spill occur.
• How did it happen.
• Are storm water drains nearby.
• Are there any injuries or persons trapped.
• Is there any possibility of Fire, Fumes.
2. Notification
• Are all personnel aware of situation.
• Has Supervisor/Manager been informed.
• Has evacuation been undertaken.
• Have Emergency Services been notified (Fire Service).
• Contact a local disposal agent.
3. Site Management
• Secure affected area if safe.
• Establish “Safe Assembly Point”.
• Ensure there is no cell phones, pagers within 10m.
• Turn off all spark generating equipment.
• Restrict vehicle movement around affected area(s).
4. Spill Containment (If Safe to do so)
• Put on Respirator and secure a firm fit.
• Put on Gloves, Goggles and Apron.
• Use Pads to absorb contaminant.
• Use relevant Material Safety Data Sheets for additional information.
• Place all contaminated materials and safety equipment in provided
disposal bag (with tie) in container.
• Arrange disposal with Envirowaste LTD, United Environmental or other reputable supplier.
5. Debrief and Conclusion
• Arrange a debrief between respective parties.
• Establish if all procedures were adhered to, if not, why not.
• Seek additional advice from Emergency Services personnel.
• Re-address any internal procedures to minimize further incidents.
